Sold-out 2007 Malaysian Gala Celebrates Malaysia’s 50 Year of Independence

News Reports

Event Write-Up
(Atlanta, Georgia, USA) It was a non-stop array of color, sounds, sights and tastes at the third annual Malaysian Gala held inAtlanta, Georgia. More than 360 guests attended the August 11th sold-out event organized by the 2+ year old Malaysian Association of Georgia, held this year at the Sheraton Hotel Atlanta. Attending as Guest of Honor was Malaysian Ambassador to the U.S., Her Excellency Ambassador Datuk Dr. Rajmah Hussain. Organizers flew in a TV celebrity chef fromMalaysia, Chef Zamzani Abdul Wahab (better known as “Chef Zam”), to prepare a signature dish for the event and to speak at the event. CNN Headline News anchor Richard Lui was the co-emcee for the event. Another special guest appearance was by the youngest Malaysian toclimbMt. Everest, Muhamad Muqarabbin Mokhtarrudin, who is currently cycling around the world, carrying a message of world peace from Malaysia.

The event, held at the Sheraton Hotel Atlanta, began with a “Pasar Malam” (translated as night market) themed reception featuring the sale of food, clothes, trinkets and more. Guests were treated to more than 10 authentic dishes of Malaysian origin that were prepared by local restaurants and visiting Chef Zam. Guests learned about the people diversity, beauty, and economic growth of Malaysia through video presentations. There were cultural dances of Malay, Chinese and Iban origin which were performed by the organization’s dance troupe. Organizers invited performers from a dance school to perform an Indian classical dance.

When emcee Richard Lui asked how many people in the audience were from Malaysia, only about 30% raised their hands. It was a colorful evening with an international array of attendees wearing their national outfits ranging from Japanese kimonos, to Indian saris. “I felt like I was back in Malaysia,” exclaimed Masayu Ramli, who is a Malaysian who has been living in the U.S. for more than 15 years. Peter and Shirley Walls, who drove in fromGreenville, South Carolina to attend this event remarked that, “we’ve been to all three galas, and this was the best. They (the organizers) brought Malaysia to Atlanta.”
